Accessibility Features

YakChat is committed to providing accessible, user-friendly messaging for all our users. This tutorial will show how to use each of these features.



Screen reader accessibility

Step 1: Open your screen reader

  1. Download and open a screen reader application.
  2. YakChat has been designed to make it easier for the screen reader to identify parts of the app.

Step 2: Navigate around the YakChat app

  1. Whilst the screen reader is open, navigate to the YakChat app.
  2. Use the Tab key and arrow keys to move between elements, the screen reader will read these elements out.

Keyboard navigation

Step 1: Starting the keyboard navigation

  1. Press the Tab key to start navigating through the app.
  2. Use the Tab key and arrow keys to move between elements.
  3. Use the Enter key to open pages, select checkboxes, and perform actions.

Step 2: Sending a message using your keyboard

  1. Messages can easily be sent using just your keyboard.
  2. Use the Tab key and arrow keys to navigate to the new message button.
  3. Use the Enter key to start a new message.
  4. Use the Tab key to navigate to the To field, here you can either type a number or name of a contact, press the Enter key to confirm your contact.
  5. Use the Tab key to navigate to the message field, here you can type your message, press the Enter key to send.

Visible focus

YakChat implements visible focus indicators to help users see where they are on a page.

For example, when typing a message, you can use the Arrow keys to identify icons below the text toolbar. These icons are highlighted and labeled for clarity.


Contrast

YakChat follows the minimum contrast requirements set out by WCAG 2.1 Level AA, making text and icons easier to see for all users.


Zoom functionality

You can zoom in or out to your preferred screen size using:

  1. The scroll wheel on your mouse.
  2. The zoom buttons in your browser.
  3. The Control key and either plus or minus key on your keyboard.
